In recent weeks the Government of the United States of America (USA) announced the executive decision of the U.S. President imposing a general tariff of 10% on Central American imports, affecting several goods from Honduras and other countries, this measure does not go unnoticed by the impact it can generate on trade and the balance of payments between Honduras and its main trading partner USA. USA.<\/p>\n

During the year 2024, exports from Honduras to the U.S. represented 52.6% of total exports from Honduras, highlighting manufacturing products such as clothing, automotive harnesses and agricultural goods such as bananas and coffee, while on the import side, the U.S. supplied 32.9% of goods, mainly inputs for the manufacturing industry, fuels, vehicles and food, according to figures published by the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH) in its Foreign Trade Report for goods as of December 2024.<\/p>\n

The impact of the imposition of these tariffs could be reflected in principle:<\/p>\n

Reduction of Exports<\/strong>, the imposition of an additional tariff may increase the cost of export products, decreasing competitiveness and potentially reducing exported volumes due to lower demand. This has caused an unfavorable disruption in Honduras’ trade balance, considering that the U.S. is its main trading partner and the destination market for many of its products.<\/p>\n

Some 35.5% of Honduran exports (not including assembled products, mainly garments and automotive harnesses) are destined for the U.S. market; among the main products are: coffee, bananas, melons, watermelons, pulses and vegetables; in 2024, the former accounted for around 21.6% of exports.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Growth in costs,<\/strong> in the event that Honduras decides to apply reciprocal tariffs, products imported from the United States to Honduras would become more expensive, affecting consumption and domestic production.<\/p>\n

Lower dynamism or growth in the domestic economy<\/strong>, since a decrease in exports could result in lower income for Honduran companies and workers in sectors such as agriculture and maquila, as well as a possible generalized increase in the prices of products imported from the US. product of a reciprocal application of tariffs.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that before the additional tariffs become effective as of April 9, the Trump administration established a pause until 90 days from now, which opens a temporary space for the Government of the Republic to prepare and define negotiation commissions integrated by the private and governmental sectors.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Free Trade Agreement between the United States of America, Central America and the Dominican Republic (CAFTA-DR) has been in force since 2006, and a review of tariffs on agricultural products was previously foreseen, so this would be an ideal framework for dialogue and negotiation for these new measures to be adopted by the United States of America.<\/p>\n<\/div>
